Every year the children plant their own organic vegetable garden from seeds. They love watering their garden and watching it grow. This year we planted corn, mammoth sunflowers, tomatoes, zucchinis, a bean tepee and our own pumpkin patch.
We believe every child should experience hands on science activities every day all day long which is why we strive to incorporate science into the daily play and learning of each of the children. You may see their garden and think that is a fun activity but is that really learning? You would be surprised the impact that daily hands on science activities make in the overall knowledge of the children. It not only increases their knowledge but also reading comprehension and literacy. The National Association for the Education of Young Children explains the importance of science in early education.
“Science capitalizes on children’s fascination with the everyday world to foster language and literacy development. Science learning provides a rich knowledge base that will become an essential foundation for later reading comprehension. It also provides the foundation for meaningful language and literacy development. They find that an emphasis on hands-on science leads to increases in children’s level of engagement, in language use and language skills, and in positive peer interactions.”
Young children already bring a natural curiosity to the early childhood setting but it is the teachers responsibility to foster and cultivate that curiosity in the same way you would cultivate a garden. This is the reason why the German word Kindergarten literally means “children’s garden” So remember while the children are caring for their garden we are in turn cultivating in each child not only a love of science but of knowledge and learning.
